Imogen offers online tuition
My name is Imogen, and I am a friendly and enthusiastic teacher, performing and working in the York and Leeds areas. As well as teaching privately, I currently teach violin and recorder in primary and secondary schools.
I am an experienced and well-qualified teacher. As well as teaching individuals of all ages, I am also happy to teach in small groups, for instance, siblings or friends learning together. As well as a Master of Arts degree in Music performance, I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Music Education: Instrumental and Vocal teaching.
I have experience in teaching both adults and children. My aim is to suit the lessons to each individual, and to ensure that each pupil gets the most out of and enjoys their experience. I always prioritise making sure that my students enjoy their lessons and the instrument they are learning.
I believe strongly that music is something that can be enjoyed by everyone. My teaching is focused on learning but also enjoyment and I feel that this principle is important for success. I incorporate Kodaly and Suzuki pedagogies into my teaching, for example, by including singing games and rhythms with younger pupils, and music theory and memory with older students, to develop well-rounded musicians. Please do get in touch with me if you feel I would meet your needs.

I specialise as a Violin tutor but I also regularly teach Trumpet, Ukulele, Guitar, Viola and African Drumming. From my own background and studies I believe strongly in everyone’s right to quality music education and in its proven beneficial connection to emotional and cognitive development, especially at a young age. I am the assistant conductor for the Junior String orchestra at York Music Centre; I run the Musical Development course at Converge based at York St John University; I run monthly sessions working with nursery children and I am the assistant conductor for All Seasons community orchestra. I like to draw influences from a full spectrum of musical styles to best inform my playing and teaching. As a classical violinist, I play in a professional string quartet; I play fiddle for a local folk/bluegrass group which performs at festivals and folk weekends and have performed as a session player for stage shows and in local recording studios. I studied BA (Hons) Music at York St John University and went on to study MA Community Music at the University of York. Alongside my studies I was fortunate to lead and perform in various choirs, brass bands, big bands and drumming groups; all of which has enriched my knowledge of music. It is my passion to pass on this knowledge and to encourage the new generation of musicians to achieve their full potential. In my spare time I ride a motorcycle. My adventures have taken me to Croatia and Portugal.
Tim offers online tuition
I teach piano, keyboard, flute and guitar. I teach all ages and standards and can teach in student's homes as well at my home in Acomb. As a performer, teacher, composer, arranger and conductor, I has been involved in a wide range of musical activities and roles through my education and career. Having studied at Huddersfield Polytechnic, as it was known then, Iwas awarded a Graduate Diploma in Music; then successfully undertook a Master of Arts degree at the University of York, specialising in flute.
At both Huddersfield and York I studied flute with John Barrow, who studied with Geoffrey Gilbert – one of the foremost English flute players of the 20th century – and has played in most British Orchestras. During this time I also continued my piano studies beyond Grade 8, played in various orchestras and ensembles as well as holding down a pub pianist job during term time. More recently I worked as Director of Music for Queen Ethelburga’s School, a position which I held for six years. This role involved leading choirs and instrumental groups as well as teaching GCSE, A Level and BTec music. It was a privilege to be part of the student musical journey and to see several students go on to study music at university and/or conservatoire.

Andy offers online tuition
In 2002 I graduated with a BA in Jazz Studies from the Leeds College of Music and became a peripatetic music teacher specialising in brass instruments. My main instrument is trombone.
Simultaneous to my teaching I also performed in many touring shows and bands around the UK and Europe.
Teaching involved work in many diverse schools, but I also taught privately at students’ homes. My students ranged in age from a five-year-old to an eighty-year-old.
I prepared students for music exams, giving them the skills and confidence to ensure they would pass. Important music scholarships were frequently required for progression to higher education.
I had an excellent success rate as none of my students ever failed and most passed with merit or achieved the required entrance exam results.
As well as teaching on a one to one basis I also taught small groups of up to four, and rehearsed school bands with up to forty children participating. Much of this work was in preparation for school or public performance.
In 2011 I joined the Queens Room Orchestra on board the ocean liner The Queen Mary 2, and was appointed as band leader in 2013. My responsibilites included rehearsing the musicians, choosing repertoire and liaising with guests and crew.
I remained there until the spring 2020 when the Coronavirus epidemic terminated the cruise industry’s activities.
Traditional Snare Drum and Drum Kit Tuition. Rudiments, sight reading, hand development, improvisation, Grade pieces and exams. Beats and Rhythms. I recommend that students master the snare drum at the same time as working on the full drum kit material. A player must strengthen the hands and wrists in order to master control of the sticks. This involves a fairly intense practice routine involving Rudiments, Reading and Playing exorcises. As with all instruments daily practice is required whenever possible. I have played drums for more than 20 years now and I can honestly say it is the best thing I ever decided to do. Even though it can seem hard at first all you need to do is just keep going and you will steadily begin to notice improvement. After just a year or two I was forming bands with school friends and making new friends through playing music. If you take the time and learn to play Drums to a high standard then like me you will be able to play many different styles of music and can enjoy playing live music for your entire life.
Since graduating from the University of Salford in 2004, I've worked as a professional/semi-professional musician and as a peripatetic drum tutor. I have been fortunate enough to have toured central Europe extensively and to have played as farafield as America, Canada and Mexico. I've played in venues from Murrayfield to Shepherds Bush Empire to Reading & Leeds Festivals, supporting artists such as Bryan Adams, Kings of Leon, Paulo Nutini and Elbow along the way. I also have TV and radio experience and have played live sessions on Radio 1 (Maida Vale Studios), Radio 2, XFM London and XFM Manchester. I have other studio experience including work at Monnow Valley and Chapel Studios have played on a variety of theatre productions too.
Lessons are designed to focus on what the individual needs and can cover a wide range of musical genres; from rock bands to orchestras and everything in between. From beginners to advanced, I tutor players of all ages at a pace to suit the individual.
With 30 years of experience accompanying and performing, I also teach piano and music theory. My lessons are centred around student’s goals, which can include anything from preparing for exams, learning to improvise, studying theory, composing your own music or playing pieces for enjoyment. I have a 100% pass rate for ABRSM exams. I teach individual and group lessons to students of all ages. I am currently completing an MA in Music Education at the University of York (2017).

My musical credentials include: ABRSM: Advanced certificate in Flute performance : Grade 8 Flute :Grade 7 Piano :Intermediate Piano Ensemble UNISA: Grade 8 Recorder (Treble) :Grade 6 Singing
